On the morning after a very emotional and gratifying finale of Idol Worship with Mink Stole, emotions are already a bit raw. Then I woke up to find myself on the cover of the San Francisco Chronicle Datebook in a major story celebrating 30 Years of Peaches Christ, and it all feels a little surreal. The truth is that both of these moments are possible because of San Francisco. For all of this city’s struggles, I know I could never have realized myself this way without the support of this unique community. I don’t think it could have happened anywhere else. Reading the story this morning, I was especially moved by the words from John Waters, Mink Stole, and my own mother. John’s comparison of my work ethic to his, Mink’s incredibly generous thoughts about our years of collaboration and friendship, and my mother’s reminder that I’ve always rooted for the underdog hit me harder than I expected. I’m feeling very grateful today. Thirty years is a long time, and none of it happens alone. Thank you to Tony Bravo and the San Francisco Chronicle, and thank you to San Francisco for giving me a place where I could imagine this life and somehow make it real.
